Obesity is a common and serious concern in the UAE, being higher in females than males. The direct correlation linking obesity and impediment of a healthy physical condition has been well researched and documented in recent times. Type 2 Diabetes, hypertension and coronary heart disease are the most frequent complications. Others include cerebral strokes, cancers, problems with joints (osteoarthritis) and psychological disorders. On the other side, a sustainable decrease in weight reduces these risks, increases longevity and improves quality of life.
Bariatric Surgery (also called Metabolic surgery), has in a number of clinical studies including the Swedish Obese Subject Study, proven to be the most effective treatment method to achieve sustainable weight reduction and to avoid or reverse obesity related complications. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) released during 2011 a recommendation to consider bariatric surgery earlier in the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes in obese patients in able to reduce or prevent future diabetes complications.
The Bariatric Surgery unit at RCDR offers surgical interventions for diabetic patients. Predominantly Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass, are provided for obese patients in collaboration with the adjacent Sheikh Khalifa Hospital (SKH). The Bariatric Surgery unit at RCDR includes a multidisciplinary team of highly trained Bariatric surgeons from Sweden, Diabetologists, Cardiologist, Bariatric Nurse, Physiotherapist, Nutritionist and Dietician working together with the patient to provide goal-oriented and patient-centred care in the management of obesity. This also includes identification and treatment of obesity-related conditions, lifestyle changes, and pre and post operative care.
